Mental Health and Wellbeing

There can be no health without mental health. Good mental health is essential not just for our personal wellbeing, but also to create a resilient community. As we look forward, it’s clear that regular physical activity has a huge role to play in not only making you happier and healthier and the Active & Healthy Program is here to help connect people together, give people purpose, enhance community cohesion and get people moving.

Regular physical activity can have a profoundly positive impact on depression, anxiety, ADHD, and more. It also relieves stress, improves memory, helps you sleep better, and boosts your overall mood. And you don't have to be a fitness fanatic to reap the benefits. The Active & Healthy Program offers a number of initiatives that directly support mental health including:

Walk and Talk for Wellness Program

Walk and Talk for Wellness is an initiative developed by the Bachelor of Counselling team at Griffith University. The service offers walk and talk sessions with trained facilitators from the counselling program in the School of Applied Psychology.

We know that being active, experiencing the outdoors, and connecting with others is important for our health, wellbeing and life satisfaction – so why not do them at the same time? And while the walking is great for our physical health, it’s the opportunity to chat with a trained listener in an outdoor environment that makes this activity really special.

  • Day: Every Wednesday, and second and fourth Saturday of the Month
  • Time: 3 sessions – 9am, 10am, 11am
  • Location: Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens, 230 Ashmore Road, Benowa

Men from all walks of life are welcome to come along to chat about whatever interests them in a non-threatening environment. We meet, have a coffee and walk around the lake. Simple but worthwhile, so come and join in.

Active & Healthy Recovery Project

The Active and Healthy Recovery project was funded by Partners in Recovery and developed to create sustainable opportunities for people with a lived experience of mental illness to be able to reconnect with the community through physical activity. Public Health has worked in collaboration with the Active and Healthy Alliance Gold Coast Inc and City of Gold Coast to build better referral options and support for mental health wellbeing.
