Protecting bushland

Although native vegetation covers almost 50.39 per cent of our city’s land area, the Gold Coast is much less recognised for its extensive green spaces than it is for the gold and blue of its beaches, waterways and ocean. Look to the hills beyond our urban coastal strip, and there are thousands of hectares of native bushland providing a rich habitat for a diverse range of native wildlife.

The City manages and protects more than 25,000 hectares of natural areas, reserves and wetlands throughout the city. Almost 10,000 hectares of this land is set aside for nature conservation, including more than 4000 hectares purchased by the City to protect wildlife habitat, preserve scenic views and safeguard our catchments.

Our Natural Areas team works hard to control pests and weeds in these areas, revegetate degraded bushland and protect against bushfire risk. We also develop environmentally-sensitive recreational opportunities so everyone can enjoy our natural assets.
