Social Procurement

Our City Vision, “Inspired by lifestyle. Driven by opportunity”, informs all strategic planning for the city.

The City has had a social procurement policy in place since February 2013. Since then, a great amount of work has been performed by City Procurement and the Safe and Liveable Communities Branch to institutionalise social procurement as an important strategic procurement tool.

This success is evidenced by the considerable number of social procurement initiatives undertaken and the diversity in these initiatives as well as the results and outcomes the City has achieved to date.

Social procurement delivers benefits to the City including:

Our approach to social procurement

The City is committed to social procurement, a strategic approach to meeting social objectives through procurement and contracting and in particular facilitating employment opportunities to disadvantaged communities on the Gold Coast.

The City approaches social procurement in in two ways:

Portfolio of social procurement initiatives

The City has a diversified portfolio of social procurement initiatives and contracts in place and purchases from numerous social enterprises including:

  • Endeavour Foundation for recycling services at resource recovery centres and waste transfer stations
  • Endeavour Foundation for e-waste services
  • Wesley Mission Queensland for youth services at Council community services
  • Volunteering Gold Coast for bus services
  • Animal Welfare League of Queensland for pound management services
  • Regen Australia for natural areas revegetation and restoration
  • Help Enterprises for bin enclosures
  • Carers Australia Queensland via the Social Enterprise Procurement Platform (office supplies).

As well as purchasing from social enterprises, the City has advanced social procurement to the extent where it has social procurement programs in place involving mainstream suppliers. Through these programs social benefits are achieved. These include:

  • collaborating with four office cleaning suppliers to provide 30 jobs to disadvantaged long term unemployed people through the City’s office cleaning contract
  • our City Vision, “Inspired by lifestyle. Driven by opportunity”, informs all strategic planning for the city.
