The Common Rush is (Juncus usitatus) is a native tufted perennial that grows up to one metre in height. Stems are usually 1-2 millimetres in diameter with no true leaf blades.
Flowers are open and spreading, not clustered. It flowers mainly in spring or summer, although the old flowers are present year round. It grows in damp and saturated areas or in shallow water throughout the eastern states.
This species serves several purposes including crowding out weed species that can clog waterways and providing habitat for animals.
