If you are building a new home and wish to apply for your first set of bins for your property, contact us on 07 5667 5976 at least two business days before moving in.
Please note that we do not provide collection services to vacant blocks or during the construction of a house. Someone must be living at a permanent dwelling before bins can be delivered.
Bag your rubbish. For health reasons, please wrap or bag all dust, food scraps, nappies, grass clippings and animal droppings before placing in your general waste bin.
Don’t bag your recyclables. Plastic bags should never be used or placed in recycling bins. Always place your recyclables loose into the recycling bin. Bagged recyclables are removed from the conveyor line and disposed of at the Materials Recovery Facility as bags get tangled in the machinery and prevent the recyclables from being sorted automatically.
Don’t overfill your bins. The lids must close. The collection vehicle can’t lift a bin properly if it is too heavy or overflowing. The maximum weight acceptable for a loaded wheelie bin is 75 kilograms (including the weight of the bin itself).
The following items should not go in your general waste bin:
- NO building materials, bricks, tiles or large timber off-cuts
- NO corrosive or acidic chemicals
- NO electrical appliances
- NO tree stumps or uncut palm fronds
- NO motor parts or car batteries
- NO liquids, paints, oils or solvents
- NO sand gravel or concrete
- NO hot ashes
- NO weeds with clumps of soil
- NO used syringes, needles or sharps that are not inside a sealed impermeable container.

Single dwellings and small unit blocks
For most single dwellings and small unit blocks, the general waste bin is collected every week and the recycling bin is collected every fortnight, both on the same day each week. If the resident has an optional green garden waste bin (lime green lid), it is collected every fortnight on the alternate week to the recycling bin.

- Please ensure bins are placed on the kerbside the night before collection day
We recommend you place your bins on the kerb the night before collection day to ensure your bins are emptied. Bins are generally collected any time between 6am and 6pm on collection day. Collection may occur outside these hours as required due to events, road closures, public holidays or other impacts on operations. Where possible, these will be communicated in advance.
- Bins must face the road
This means the bin lid should open towards the road. To ensure collection, please place your bins at least 30 centimetres (12 inches) apart, and no more than one metre (three feet) from the kerb. Bins should be placed away from trees, cars, posts or any other blockage that will prevent collection vehicle access.
- Remove bins from the kerbside after collection
To prevent bins from becoming damaged or stolen, bins should be returned to their usual place on your property as soon as possible after collection.
Note: Waste collection services operate as usual on public holidays. Please ensure bins are placed kerbside the night before collection day.
Larger unit blocks and apartment buildings
For larger unit blocks and apartment buildings, collection of bins is often more frequent than outlined above. Do not use the bin day finder to find out your collection days. Check with your body corporate or contact us on

If it is your collection day and your bin collection has been missed, please call us on 07 5667 5976 between 8am and 5pm to have this problem investigated.
We ask that you include your contact details, address, bin type and any possible reason that the bin may not have been emptied. There are several reasons why a bin does not get collected, the main ones being:
- the bin was not put out in time (bins should be out for collection by 6am)
- the bin was not able to be reached by the truck (cars parked in front or other obstructions)
- the bin is overfull or contains materials that are not allowed (see the 'Filling your bins' drop-drown section for more information)
- driver error.
Place your bin kerbside at your earliest convenience and our contractors will return as soon as possible.
If your residential bins are broken or missing or stolen, you can either complete our online form to request a repair or replacement, or contact us on 07 5667 5976 between 8am and 5pm on business days. You will need to provide the following information:
- your name, address and daytime contact phone number
- the type and size of bin that is broken or missing/stolen
- if broken, the part that is broken (lid, wheel, split body).
Request a repair or replacement bin
The size of your wheelie bin is imprinted on the right hand side of the top rim of your bin body (see photo).
The stamp includes information about the Australian Standard number, bin size (in litres) and bin weight (in kilograms).
You may be required to know your bin size when changing sizes or repairing your bins.
The City offers different bin sizes and types to suit your needs. To help increase the separation and recovery of recyclable materials, the City promotes the use of the optional green waste bin and the upgrade to the larger 360 litre recycling bin.
If you need additional waste or recycling bins provided for a temporary time (up to three months) at your residence or building, you can apply for additional bin services. Fees apply. Residents who are unable to physically move their bins to and from the kerbside, due to disability or impairment, and have no able bodied person to assist them, can apply for an assisted household bin service. The collection vehicle driver will then wheel the bins out and return them to and from an agreed place on the resident’s property. The assistance service is provided at no additional cost to the normal servicing charge, provided that the applicant has written support from their medical professional.

Gold Coast Waste Management services a number of properties with steep driveways and difficult access, especially in rural and hinterland areas. Here are a few tips to assist residents in this situation.
- Select or build a flat shaded place next to your driveway but within your property boundary to store your wheelie bins.
- For residents with small waste outputs or restricted storage areas or verges, smaller 140 litre wheelie bins are available.
- Wheelie bin brakes are an option for controlling bins safely on slopes.
- If storing your bins well away from your gate, a bin caddy attachment which fits to your vehicle’s tow ball allows for easy towing.
Wheelie bin brakes and towing devices are available for purchase on the internet and at your local hardware store.
Bins are collected every day, even when your bin day is a public holiday. On public holidays however, the collection time may be earlier - please ensure your bins are placed kerbside the night before your collection day.
