In 1882, Joseph Wood Proud, aged 12 years, migrated to Queensland with his parents and nine brothers and sisters.
As an adult, Joe Proud settled near Labrador and built a colonial homestead for his family.
He named his homestead Hollywell after his old home in England.
In 1890, he bought 120 hectares of scrubland at what is now Hollywell and Runaway Bay.
Joseph Wood Proud was an Alderman on the Southport Town Council for 34 years and later, Mayor of Southport until 1948. He died 11 January 1952 and is buried in the Southport General Cemetery.
