Novel coronavirus (COVID-19) update

Community sport and recreation clubs can return to activity, as long as they meet the Queensland Government COVID-19 restrictions. This includes the completion of all the requirements documented in any associated Industry COVID Safe Plan before activity begins. Visit Queensland Government - Return to Play for details.

For more information on City's response, please visit

City of Gold Coast’s Recreational Services will endeavour to keep our sport and recreational facilities open as often as possible, however at times they may be recommended for closure due to wet weather, maintenance or field renovations. For details of current sports field closures view the table below.

Details of sports field closures due to renovations can be found on our renovation schedule.

Sports field closure information is updated at 8.30am and 2pm business days (if there are any changes) and is unable to be updated after business hours or over the weekend. Advice due to wet weather is only a recommendation, as all sports fields within all parks are unable to be inspected by City Officers and weather conditions may change during this time. In these cases, it is the responsibility of the respective club onsite to determine playing and/or training conditions.

Schools, clubs and groups who use the fields against the City's advice are reminded that should they cause damage to the playing surface, they may be liable for fines and/or cost for any damage caused.

Should you have any queries regarding the use of the City's sports fields, please call 07 5667 5972 during business hours or email

Sports field closures as at 8.30am 16 June 2021.

Possible reasons for sports field closures

Wet weather

The City aims to create more opportunities for juniors to stay active and play sport during extended periods of wet weather where possible. Please refer to the City's Sports Field Closure Policy for further information.

Field renovations

The City has an annual renovation and maintenance program for sports fields and facilities, to ensure the fields are in a safe and useable playing condition. This usually occurs between September and December as this is the ideal growing period.

The type of renovation work undertaken on sports fields can include:

  • Coring – mechanical removal of soil core, which is then dragged back across the surface and broken up to top dress the surface. This decompacts and aerates the field.
  • Scarification – mechanical thatch removal via a mower with vertical blades. Thins the turf surface and removes old grass. Completed in single or double directions, dependent on conditions and timeframes.
  • Topdressing – application of soil or sand to alleviate undulations and unevenness of the surface.
  • Recycling top dresser – pulls soil up from 200 millimetres down in the surface profile and spreads it evenly across the surface behind the machine.
  • Verti draining – punches holes, via a multiple solid tine aerator, deep into the surface and decompacts the profile as it is removed. Relieves compaction, allowing air, water and fertiliser to disperse into the soil.
  • Resurface – use existing levels and soil conditions. Remove existing turf and re-lay with new turf variety.
  • Rebuild – Using a rotary hoe, amend soil conditions and reshape surface via laser machinery to provide a more consistent, well-drained playing surface.
  • Amendment Program – material to improve the soil and decrease nutritional deficiencies. Applied before renovations commence as most renovation work involves the profile.
